Regain your independence, explore with confidence

Our story

Our Story: Regaining Freedom, One Roll at a Time

was born right here in the heart of EAST DEVON out of a very simple, powerful realization: using a mobility scooter should be a ticket to an active social life, not just a tool for essential errands.

For many people, a change in mobility can cause their world to shrink. The fear of navigating uneven pavements, high kerbs, or busy crossings alone can easily trap people indoors looking at the same four walls. We saw neighbors losing their confidence, missing out on fresh air, and feeling increasingly isolated from the community they love.

We decided it was time to change that.

Inspired by the incredible, community-first work of local Devon mobility champions like Steve Beer [●], we set out to build a group where nobody is ever left behind. We wanted to create a safe, joyful space where the scooter is celebrated as a tool for pure freedom.

Today, the group meets meets every Monday and Friday morning from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM. We don't worry about clinical forms or rushing. Instead, we focus on what truly matters: gathering a supportive pack of friends to explore smooth, pre-checked paved loops, sharing stories over a warm cuppa at local cafes, and enjoying a hearty laugh during our occasional group meals out.

We believe that our members are the true heroes of this club for stepping out of their comfort zones. Whether you are a brand-new scooter user or just looking for a ready-made circle of friends, our story is just beginning—and we would love for you to be a part of it.

What we offer

Independence on Wheels provides a variety of engaging activities designed to support your independence and connect you with a vibrant community. From friendly meet-ups to guided explorations, we have something for everyone.

Meet for a friendly cuppa

Join us every Monday and Friday from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM at fully accessible community spaces and cafes like Park Life in Heavitree. It's a perfect opportunity to chat, share advice, and enjoy a coffee or tea with new friends.

Explore flat, paved areas

Our club organizes smooth, step-free nature rolls and local street outings around Exeter, including the Whipton area. We use wide tarmac paths that are easy to navigate on a scooter, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all.

Plan occasional meals out

Now and then, we transition from a quick coffee to a full group lunch at highly accessible local pubs and restaurants with level access. Enjoy delicious food and great company in welcoming environments.

Build new friendships

Beyond activities, Independence on Wheels is about community. Connect with like-minded individuals, share experiences, offer support, and form lasting friendships that enrich your life.

"Joining Independence on Wheels has completely changed my life. I feel more connected, more active, and I've made wonderful new friends."
