Our journey with INDEPENDENCE ON WHEELS
Discover the story behind INDEPENDENCE ON WHEELS, our mission to empower mobility scooter users in Exeter, and the dedicated team making it all happen. Learn how we are building a supportive community, one roll at a time.

Our inspiration: A wheels-on approach to freedom
INDEPENDENCE ON WHEELS was born from a simple yet profound realization: a mobility scooter should be a ticket to a vibrant social life, not a barrier. We saw too many individuals confined indoors, their scooters primarily used for essential errands. This inspired us to create a club where scooters unlock adventure, community, and joy.
Navigating uneven pavements, high curbs, and steep hills can be daunting alone. That's why we've fostered a safe, supportive environment, allowing members to confidently explore local gems like Heavitree Pleasure Ground. Our goal is to restore the simple pleasures of fresh air, warm conversations, and a sense of belonging for everyone, regardless of how they get around.

Feelings we foster: Independence, support, and joy
When you join INDEPENDENCE ON WHEELS, we want you to feel a profound sense of independence and empowerment. Your scooter is an adventure tool, allowing you to explore Exeter on your terms. We achieve this by navigating accessible routes together, demonstrating that your community is still yours to discover.
We ensure you feel fully supported and safe, offering total peace of mind. Our group moves at a relaxed pace, we check pavement accessibility in advance, and we always look out for one another. This removes the anxiety of traveling alone. Above all, we aim for you to feel happy and included, sharing laughter over a warm cuppa, enjoying meals out, and experiencing the genuine joy of fresh air and camaraderie. We want you to feel confident and respected, boosting your self-esteem and belonging to a truly caring community.

Who benefits most from INDEPENDENCE ON WHEELS?
INDEPENDENCE ON WHEELS is designed for those who feel isolated by limited mobility, often spending days looking at the same four walls. Our club especially benefits the newly restricted, who may feel nervous or unconfident navigating public pavements alone. We also welcome the isolated and lonely, who miss the simple joy of casual chats and shared experiences.
For the nature-starved, we provide access to local parks like Heavitree Pleasure Ground and other outdoor spots that were once out of reach. Additionally, caregivers in Devon find peace of mind knowing their loved ones are safely socializing, enjoying new environments, and building independence. By opening our doors every Monday and Friday, we are dedicated to transforming lives.
"INDEPENDENCE ON WHEELS has given me back my freedom and a wonderful group of friends. Every meeting is a joy."
