St Sidwell's Community Centre
Our story
ndependence on Wheels is a community-focused mobility club and local charity network operating across Exeter and East Devon, UK. Led by Chairman Steve Beer and a dedicated local team, the group is designed to give mobility scooter and wheelchair users the confidence, resources, and social support to explore the outdoors safely.
the confidence, resources, and social support to explore the outdoors safely.
1. Vetted, Worry-Free Routes
The team eliminates the anxiety of navigating public spaces by thoroughly pre-scouting paths before any group outing. Every selected trail features wide, flat tarmac surfaces and properly dropped kerbs, ensuring there are no hidden obstacles, unexpected steep inclines, or sudden steps.
2. Combating Loneliness & Social Isolation
The club provides a ready-made social circle for individuals facing limited mobility. Group rides seamlessly transition into accessible community spaces—such as the St Sidwell’s Community Centre or the Heavitree Park Life Cafe—offering members a regular, friendly opportunity to chat, share hot drinks, and build lasting friendships.
3. Equipment Recycling Initiative
To ensure no one is left behind due to a lack of resources, the group operates an equipment support programme. They look for unused, working mobility scooters and wheelchairs from the community and refurbish them. This initiative provides gear directly to members who do not own their own equipment, keeping everyone safe and included.
